Description

Kominos Wines, at Glen Aplin, offers a unique and enjoyable dimension to any Granite Belt winery visit. This September the winery celebrates 25 years of Kefi at the Winery, a unique fun night that highlights the wines of Kominos Wines and the winery’s Greek and Australia heritage.

The unique qualities and differences of this winery start in the vineyards. Here the vines are traditionally cane pruned requiring the skilled hand pruning techniques employed in Bordeaux. Long dormant canes are hand selected and individually tied in winter to provide the best crop load for the following spring.

40 year old vines which are made to struggle and toil on shallow Granitic soils take pride of place along the winery’s highway entrance and have produced many premium wines including the soon to be released 2012 vintage.

The world’s greatest premium winegrape varieties play the leading roles Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz are complemented by lesser known Cabernet Franc, Mouvedre and Muscat Frontignan. White super premium varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay are the focus with alongside lesser known varieties like Chenin Blanc and Viognier .

The philosophy of care of the vineyards employing many soft techniques is also central to the production of all wines. Red wines are produced with traditional fermentation techniques and white wines are all processed cold to protect and retain their rich fruit flavours in stainless steel vessels in a modern winery under the 10m winery ceilings.

Mary Comino has chartered the winery’s export growth for 16 years and jointly oversees export winemaking styles with winemaker and UQ Ag Sc graduate Tony Comino. Tony has overseen all 30 vintages. Tony’s depth of experience was highlighted at the AWRI anniversary tasting in April 2010 when he very successfully competed with 15 leading Australian Winemakers at a unique taste-off (visit our website for details)
