Chillagoe - Mungana Caves National Park
Chillagoe
Description
The park covers 3645 hectares and has eight separate locations for you to visit. The parks limestone bluffs form fire protected islands, which support a special range of plants growing in their fissures. The plants are relics of a wetter era and are deciduous, losing their leaves in the dry season to aid survival. Some of these are Kurrajongs, Helicopter Trees, Batswing Coral Trees and Bauhinias. Birdlife is plentiful with more than 75 species recorded within a 20km radius of Chillagoe. Blue faced honeyeaters, black cockatoos, pale headed rosellas and apostle birds can be commonly seen. Guided tours of the Donna, Trezkinn and Royal Arch caves are conducted daily . The Archways, Pompeii and Bauhinia Caves can be explored without a guide but please contact a ranger before visiting and take a torch with you. A walking track links the Donna and Royal Arch limestone bluffs via the unusual formation of Balancing Rock. Other activities include birdwatching, visiting the smelter ruins, old marble quarry or swimming in the weir.
