Unique heritage-listed Chinese temple built in 1903. Includes original artefacts, interpretative museum, giftshop and 30 minute guided tours. The temple is the only one of its kind remaining and the only one dedicated to Hou Wang outside China. This award-winning property is owned by the National Trust of Queensland.

Description

Atherton Chinatown includes an interpretive museum and a guided tour of the site including the temple and meeting hall. The interprative displays provide a fascinating glimpse of Chinese migrant life and what it was like living on the tropical Tablelands a century ago. Interactive displays, dioramas and multimedia exhibits interpret the journeys, hardships and successes of the Chinese pioneers of North Queensland. Browse through the shop, with its range of unique gifts and souvenirs, jewellery, feng-shui symbols, crystals and lots more. As you leave the museum, your tour guide will explain the history while you explore Atherton Chinatown. During the tour, view the beautiful carvings and ornate altar panel, hand carved in China more than a century ago. The elaborate interior is belied by the temples modest exterior.
