Description
The Hasties Swamp National Park is a 57 hectare block located on the southern outskirts of the Atherton township. The park was gazetted in 1980 and expanded in 1986. It is managed by the QPWS and has a International Union of Conservation of Nature & Natural Resources category II rating. Aquatic habitats include open water, reeds, muddy edges and sedgeland, their proportions changing as the swamp follows its annual cycle of wet and dry. The surrounding woodland contains patches of wet eucalypt and rainforest, linking Hasties Swamp with larger forests nearby. The varied habitat attracts a wide range of resident and migrant birds, sometimes in large numbers.
